After we left Inis Meáin, we drove through the beautiful region of Joyce’s Country in Connemara. The dramatic landscape of Connemara is jaw dropping. Tall barren mountains speckled with sheep, contrasts the lush green grass and sparkling lakes in the valleys.

Hidden in this region is an old estate, build by a wealthy British man for his wife in 1863. He bought the property where they honeymooned. Sadly, she died a few years after the completion of the home. In 1920, the family sold the estate to Flemish Benedictine nuns who lost their Abbey in World War I. The nuns run a school at the Abbey, and keep the grounds open to the public.

Presently, you can tour the abbey, the chapel, and the gardens. Additionally, there is a nice shop selling Irish gifts. Kylemore is the perfect place to stop on a long car ride, as it is a beautiful view to stretch your legs. Serafina enjoyed the children’s path, which had all sorts of playful features from waterfalls to fish chairs. Each tree had a number engraved in a log next to it, which she excitedly ran to each stopping to trace each number with her finger.

Perhaps the best kept secret is that Kylemore Abbey has a delicious lunch at Mitchell’s Cafe. The restaurant is very vegetarian friendly, which is a little unusual in the rural areas of the West. After a walk around the grounds, we stopped in the cafeteria to enjoy a delicious cafe style meal. The three of us shared a bit of everything. We had a delicious goat cheese and sundried tomato quiche, vegetarian vegetable soup, brown bread, and three side salads (caprese, bean salad, and basic lettuce). Everything was absolutely fresh, gently seasoned, and wonderfully healthy. We were pleasantly surprised at how lovely the meal was, and would definitely stop there again. I highly recommend stopping by Kylemore Abbey if you find yourself in Connemara.
